Geographic Targeting System

Many states have experienced groundwater contamination problems from a wide variety of point and nonpoint sources, including agricultural chemicals. However, not enough data is available in North Dakota to determine if agricultural chemical compounds have widely impacted water quality in the state. With limited funding, it is imperative that prevention and monitoring efforts be focused on the highest priority aquifers. The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality, Division of Water Quality, has developed a system for prioritizing aquifers throughout the state, known as a Geographic Targeting System (GTS).
