Regulated Volatile Organic Chemicals

The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets current drinking water standards for drinking water. All community and non-transient non-community water systems must conduct monitoring for the following regulated volatile organic chemicals (VOCs): Benzene, Carbon tetrachloride, cis-1,2-Dichloroethylene, Dichloromethane, Ethylbenzene, Monochlorobenzene, o-Dichlorobenzene, p-Dichlorobenzene, Styrene, Tetrachloroethylene(PCE), Toluene, trans-1,2-Dichloroethylene, Trichloroethylene(TCE), Vinyl chloride, Xylenes(total), 1,1Dichloroethylene, 1,1,1-Trichloroethane, 1,1,2-Trichloroethane, 1,2Dichloroethane, 1,2-Dichloropropane, and 1,2,4-Trichlorobenzene. Organic chemicals that are regulated in drinking water are a group of human-made chemical compounds and are components of a variety of pesticides and industrial and commercial products, including degreasers, paints, and petroleum products.
