State Clean Diesel Grant Program

The State Clean Diesel grant application period is now OPEN! Schools, cities, counties, and other government agencies that require larger, diesel-powered vehicles are encouraged to apply for State Clean Diesel Grant awards.

The NDDEQ will issue approximately $380,000 in awards funded by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency for the purchase of new or newer diesel-powered, zero-emission, hybrid, or alternatively fueled vehicles. The purpose of the funding is to reduce diesel emissions in accordance with the Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) of the Energy Policy Act of 2010. To date, 127 older vehicles in North Dakota have been replaced using this funding, with a reduction in air emissions of about 225 tons over the lifetime of those vehicles. The application and additional guidance is available below.

All applications must be received by the NDDEQ by 5:00 p.m. CT on March 31, 2025 to be considered.

The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality, through the US Environmental Protection Agency, reviews grant applications and awards funds for the replacement of old diesel-powered school buses and trucks with new cleaner diesel-powered vehicles. The Diesel Emissions Reduction Act (DERA) of the Energy Policy Act of 2010 allocates funds to states to implement projects that reduce diesel emissions. These replacements are being conducted utilizing North Dakota’s annual DERA funding.


The North Dakota Department of Environmental Quality, through the US Environmental Protection Agency, issued $375,034 in awards to the following recipients for the replacement of old diesel-powered vehicles and school buses. These replacements are being conducted utilizing North Dakota’s FY2023 DERA funding.
